What is computational music?

clock December 27, 2010 19:37 by author Administrator

I'm sure, those who love music will not normally love mathematics equally and a mathematician might love music to only level of entertainment.

From the day I come to this world I have wondered "How the people write such beautiful and meaningful lyrics and the most amazing what makes them compose refreshing tunes?"

To my understanding, music is series of some patterns to please human listening abilities; therefore one an write some mathematical equations to really understand its dimensions. In fact, I'm talking about computational music.

So now, if I talk about computational music: there must be theory of computation based on Indian, Western, Eastern music. Let me talk here about the Indian Music computational theory or the so called Computer generated Indian Music.

Any software which might generate Indian music must be capable of encoding generic rules of Indian classical music and it must be able to generate appropriate alaaps, taans and swara-vistar based on it.

Other features it must include should be as follows to make it truly successful based on Indian Music computational Theory.

If input is provided as Aroha (ascending order of notes) and Avaroha (descending order of notes) along with Vadi (a dominant) and Samvadi (a sub-dominant) notes of the Raga to the software and it must generates a Bandish (a complete set of musical notes having meaning and base in Indian Music) at the click. It should also generate a text file giving the details of the composition so that can document the textual description of the rendering for future reference and analysis. Such tools will be really learning tool to learn music and understand these rules with the help of a simple text file generated based on Computation.

Music Computational Engine

In my last article "What is Computational Music?" I explained in plain words what is computational music and what will be expected from a software that generates computational music based on Indian Music Computational theory. This article is giving a simple introduction on how to generate computational tones for fun and learning power of computational music engines or software.

Step 1: Go to site called tones.wolfram.com/generate/

Step 2: Make sure to have Quick Time Plug-in installed on your browser.

Step 3: Make sure your computer can play sound i.e MIDI Data.

Step 4: Make sure you have latest version of standard browsers and Javascript enabled.

Step 5: tones.wolfram.com cannot work without Internet connection make sure it works, however it can work without broadband connection.

Step 6 : Now, Look at the compositional controls on the web page, to develop your tone you must have knowledge of following before you really begin developing your own composed tone:

   1. Musical Scale

   2. Music Pitch Levels

   3. Time Based : Tempo

   4. Time Based : Duration

   5. Music Instruments

Step 7 : Once you have acquired knowledge of concepts mentioned in step 6 to certain degree you can start experimenting to generate computational tones.

Step 8:  Assuming that you have some degree of knowledge of music genre, we can select "new composition button"

Step 9 : Select the Style or music genre.

Step 10 : You may select "Show Variations" of the music style you have selected. It shows images for five compositions derived by making increasing changes to the Seed and Rule used to generate them.

Step 11 : One by one select the Instruments, Scale, Tempo, etc.

Step 12 : If you are done, now play or download your tone.

Review of Book : "The Music of India"

clock December 13, 2010 19:33 by author Administrator

This book titled "The Music of India" by H.A.Popley is one the master piece part of "THE HERITAGE INDIA" series, last published in 1996 and first published in 1921.

Since this book was written during the British days, this book attempts to give a crystal clear image of Indian Music to the then European communities as well as to educated Indians away from the essence of Indian Music.

The aim of the writers (H.A Popley, Coomaraswamy A, Ragni) was to invoke keen interest of people inclined towards music and inspire them to love Indian music to such an extend that they spread the Indian music culture and genres by means of musical societies and learning schools.
The information provided is an accurate survey of main stream Indian musical instruments, Indian ragas, the Indian music time scales, it's history and it's comparative study with the western music style and culture.

This book has relevant definitions with expository passages of great length to impress on each topic in Indian music, therefore, this book is piece of work relevant in today's context also for getting started to learn on Indian music.

Yes, music in India has changes a great deal and this book was written when Indian motion picture industry did not exist. Books like these must have been great starting point for many people who got started the motion picture industry in India.

This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. I believe this work is culturally important, and despite the imperfections, publishers have elected to bring it back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide.

It is a new segmented product of all the possible live wikis on internet. It is a direct consequence of human nature's way of looking things and objects, their meaning and their depth. In fact, it is inevitable segmentation of knowledgebase(s) available on internet for our daily consumption of information byte required to drive our information economy.

This product specializes in audio technology base and it can be referred by a specialist as well as novice. Such projects are de-massified [1] versions of encyclopedias of Internet world, therefore we need to understand the success of such projects only based the collaborative power of human intelligence shared on Internet and time of each individual spends on developing such databases.

The initiative of such nature needs  to tap the collaborative power of mankind is right step in process of making web a more meaningful and having large semantic depth of specialize topic like audio science which encompassed the music and movie industry also.

Let's take such initiatives to run in hands of people who are both consumer and producers of Information! The real driving force of our economies.
