Vaanam - Movie review

Vaanam movie review

Upto two months, 'Evan Di Unna Pethan' was not just a song in Vaanam but it was another meaning for the movie with Simbu, to whom belongs the lyrics and voice credit. Vaanam is a remake of the Telugu movie Vedam, that arises to be a mega hit of 2010. Director Krish presents Vaanam, which shows the lives of five individuals, their needs, their feeling to achieve it and their lucks, which brings them together. Will they abandon their needs for others? Is it really a materialistic world we live in?

Cable Raja (Simbhu), a slum dweller in Chennai, who works in his neighborhood cable TV. Bharath, a military little terror from Bangalore, who desires to be a rock star against his parent's wish. Saroja (Anushka), a sex worker in Andhra, who wants her profession to start her own. Hamid (Prakash Raj) from Coimbatore, who is in search of his younger brother, who had run away the group violence. Revathi (Saranya) a weaver in Thoothukudi, who is urgent for debt with poverty to rescue her small son.

Their desperations in life?

Cable Raja, acting is a wealthy, is in a relationship with a rich girl hoping he could get rich the smart way. The one day arrives when the girl wants to introduce Cable Raja to her parents. The venue, a samll new year eve party with an entry fee of Rs.40,000.  How can the poor Cable Raja give the party?

Bharath walks out on his mother and leaves to Chennai to attend a rock program, which he believes will give him the break, he has been desiring for. His rock band drives to Chennai but gets tyre problem on the way. When Bharath's friends try to repaire it, he is left alone with his girlfriend on the lonely highway. A gang of rowdies meet the couple, subdue Bharath and kidnap with his girlfriend. How can he saving her?

Saroja had reached the height of tolerance servicing her clients day in and day out. In the sporting house, an ignominious police inspector devastates her repeatedly. Saroja, along with her trans gendered friend, give a slip to the inspector and her madam, and escape to Chennai. Lusty men  are always on Saroja's behind. Will she be independent make a living for herself?

Hamid, his pregnant wife and younger brother get stuck in the middle of a radical right wing procession. They get violently attacked and Hamid's wife suffers a miscarriage. An Inspector, who is also a powerful police man, frees the attackers and insults Hamid for his religion. Beat and denied justice, Hamid's brother has reached home soon. Hamid goes in search of his brother, who promised he would fight back. Can Hamid find his brother and bring him home?

Poor weavers Revathi and her father-in-law repay Rs.40,000 to a loan cheat. Their only hope in life is Revathi's son, who is a best in his studies. When the loan goes unpaid. the loan shark takes away Revathi's son and puts him on bonded labour in a salt pan. Without knowing alternate, Revathi decides to sell her kidney through a broker, who brings her to a doctor. The sincere doctor, doubting a commercial kidney transplant turns down Revathi. Can Revathi sell her kidney to manage the money, which would release her child?

Vaanam's first half brings you to this edge of the seat situation. What would happen if these individuals' struggling lives overlap? That is revealed in one of the most fast phased scenes ever seen in Kollywood.

Director Krish hasn't just got a new name in Kollywood, but had earned a velvet seat too. The story, screenplay and appealing editing isfine, with not the slightest of space for flaws. Five stories within one, which are treated with equal importance and flow to all the characters is Anthony Gonsalves' magic. Nirav Shah's camera quickly adapts to dusty villages to crowded slums to posh dance floors with ease. Cinematography in the thrilling climax scene, along with Yuvanshankar Raja's heart thumping music is a huge bonus. Cable Raja is Simbhu's best role till date. He had abandoned his cliched' young guy image, and had lived the character and its emotions. We can say, last decade was Simbhu's honeymoon phase in Kollywood, some demanding roles are headed the actor's way henceforth.

Santhanam as Tan- tana-tan Cheenu has continued the partnership he offered with Arya and Karthee, in Boss Engira Baskaran and Siruthai. Anushka as the hot sex worker is too hot to this summer. Vaanam's first half is reserved for 'Evan Di Unna Pethan', the rest of the songs perfectly matched with the moods on screen. Saranya as the weaver with innocent touching face of our struggling farmers and artisans in rural India. Happy go with lucky Cable Raja, entire his escapades says “Enna Vazhka Da” (What a life!). We can say while watching film, wow, what a movie.

Actress Anushka

Attacking recent reports that she refused to be part of the Tamil remake of her Telugu super hit Vedam, directed by promising director Krish with Allu Arjun in the lead, famous actress Anushka has confirmed that she would repeat the role of a sex worker Saroja in Vedam's Tamil remake titled Vaanam.

"I'm playing in Vaanam, the same character (Saroja) that I played in Vedam. When we did it in Telugu, it was a new venture, a multi-starrer and a different kind of a movie. Even though we knew it was an amazing script, we all had our inhibitions as to how people would take it. But we had a terrific response from the media and the audience. We are planning to put in a lot more in Vaanam. We are also looking to make it more commercial this time," the pretty actress was quoted as saying.

Asked how different the Tamil version is from the Telugu version, Anushka said: "I just started working on this project from Monday. The star cast is different but otherwise the version is the same." Besides Anushka, Vaanam will have Simbu, Bharath, Vega and Sonia Agarwal in the lead role. The film is produced by V.T.V. Ganesh; cinematography is by Nirav Shah and music by Yuvanshankar Raja.

Singam - Movie Review

singam movie surya

It's really been a very long time that our movie buffs enjoyed watching a good film. With most of this year's releases turning to be mere dissappointmens. Surya's Singam stands out a mind-boggling entertainer. The duo Surya - Hari makes it on for a successful hat-trick with Singam as the film proves to be an excellent show piece.

To be precise, you wouldn't actually agonize that you've spent two and a half hours keeping an eye on this film. Hari has penned such a screen play, which has the right mix of action, fun, frolic emotions and romance. Surya doesn't try to touch the lines of typical mass heroes by uttering loud punch dialogues and bashing down hundreds of men at the same time. Of course there are more action sequences that have logical factors and are sure to win your appreciations.

Set in the back-drop of Nellore, a small town the film revolves around inspector Durai Singam (Surya), who joined the service incisively because of his father's wish. He settles every dispute in town patiently with his gentle talks. Then comes Kavya (Anushka) a city girl on vacation who promptly falls love with him. E'erything seems to be marked by good fortune until MayilVaaganan (Prakash Raj) comes across Durai Singam. As they lock horns, things take a different turn with second half keeping e'eryone on the edge of seats.

Kudos to director Hari for churning out such a successful commercial entertainer, he has overshadowed all his previous records with this film. Singam can be adjusted as a better show than his yesteryear film Saamy for its interesting plot prevailling all throughout the show. Although, it takes nearly an hour to establish the characters and the conflicts, the voltage peak after the intermission trivilises the minuses. On performance, levels Surya is outstanding with his flawless performance. Even during scenes, where he hops up and down doing goofy stunts, things turn to be incredulously good. That's all because of his charismatic appeal. His proficiency with emot with the emotions gains him more acceptance as a mass hero.

For Anushka, it's the best film as she gets more footage, thanks to Hari, for utilizing her great potential unlike other filmmakers, who just sign her for glamour attributes. Vivek's comedy tracks are enjoyable. It's obvious that he has been coming up with similar shows as his previous films. Radha Ravi, Nasser, Manorama have played their roles well. Prakash Raj is simply out-standing as he gets a powerful role to perform after his magnum opus Gilli. For sure, this will be one of the greatest mile stones of his carreer.

Just watch out for his performance during the penultimate sequences and while playing fool with Surya on the chase, he is just superb. Devi Sri Prasad strikes with pleasing melodies as almost all the songs have turned out well. Especially, the numbers "Kaadhal Vandhale" and "En Idhayam" wins hands down.

Hari impressed by his giving importance even for minor roles. Cinematography and editing is better in this film.

Congrats to production designers not only for produce this film within short period but also for avoided unneccessary expenses.

Singam will be one of the best films of 2010, render unexpected profits too.
