Dhanush and remakes go to extend. This time, the actor is back on screen with Mappillai, remake of his father-in-law Rajni's 1989 blockbuster of the same name. Mappillai is special for many reasons, most importantly, for its name. The film also marks the Kollywood introduction of young sensation Hansika Motwani. In Mappillai, Manisha Koirala, who played the female lead opposite Rajni in Baba, appears as Dhanush's mother-in-law. This is the second time combination with director Suraj after their blockbuster Polladavan.
Definetly, Dhanush's Mappillai has the same game like original. The film describes the story of Saravannan (Dhanush) who falls in love with Gayathri (Hansika Motwani), daughter of a rich businesswoman Rajeshwari (Manish Koirala). Though Saravannan and Gayathri get married, her mother commits to separate the couple. So Saravannan decides to teach a lesson to his aunty. And the rest of the story is about how Saravannan, with the help of his friend Child Chinna (Vivek), meets Rajeshwari.
It's Dhanush, Dhanush and Dhanush all the way. The film completely belongs to him; he speaks punch dialogues, sings and dances. In fact, Dhanush has done it all pretty thinfs. Again, for the second time, the Dhanush-Vivek combo sets the screen on fire. In Mappillai, get ready for some comedy tracks between the duo (remember Padikathavan?). Debutant Hansika Motwani looks beautiful on screen; however her character is very limited. Manish Koirala makes a strong comeback to Kollywood after a long gap. Ashish Vidyarthi, Kadhal Thandapandi, Sathyan Sivakumar, Vaiyapuri, Madhan Bob, Chitti Babu, Pattimandram Raja and Sri Ranjani have performed their parts well.
Mani Sharma's lively tunes is other highlight of the film with the song 'Enoda Rasi' standing out. Director Suraaj, who has also handled the story and screenplay, has followed the Rajni hit faithfully.
